Meta has temporarily suspended Threads in Turkey following an order from the Turkish Competition Authority (TCA).

With effect from 29 April, the technology giant announced the shutdown in response to the trade body issuing an interim order that prevented data sharing between Threads and Instagram, a decision which Meta disagreed with.

Meanwhile, the company claims it has complied with the Turkish legal standards and plans to appeal the decision.

In a blog post, the social media giant revealed there is no impact to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or any other Meta services in Turkey or Threads in other countries.

It also gave users the option to choose whether to deactivate but not delete their Threads profile, or to delete their profile. If a user decides to deactivate their profile, then their posts and interactions with other people’s posts will become visible again if Threads returns to the country.

Meta said: “The TCA recently issued an interim order prohibiting the sharing of data between Threads and Instagram. We disagree with the interim order, we believe we are in compliance with all Turkish legal requirements, and we will appeal.

“The TCA’s interim order leaves us with no choice but to temporarily shut down Threads in Turkey. We will continue to constructively engage with the TCA and hope to bring Threads back to people in Turkey as quickly as possible.”

Additionally, the company stated it will no longer remove AI edited images and audio that don’t otherwise break its rules, instead, it will rely on labelling and contextualisation.

Meta, Vice President of Content Policy, Monika Bickert, said: “We agree that providing transparency and additional context is now the better way to address this content.

“The labels will cover a broader range of content in addition to the manipulated content that the Oversight Board recommended labelling.”

Bickert added: “If we determine that digitally-created or altered images, video or audio create a particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of importance, we may add a more prominent label so people have more information and context.”

Meta follows the likes of YouTube, which recently launched a new element within its Creator Studio, where creators will have to disclose when they upload AI-generated content.

YouTubers creators will now be required to check a box when the content of their upload “is altered or synthetic and seems real”, to avoid misinformation.

The parent company of Instagram and Facebook, Meta, has announced it will be labelling images on its platforms that have been enhanced by AI, in a move to call out “people and organisations that actively want to deceive people”.

In a statement, Meta President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg announced the tech giant is working with industry partners on common technical standards for identifying AI content, including video and audio.

Currently, photorealistic images created using Meta’s AI imaging tool are already labelled as “Imagined with AI”, however, the company announced it would work to begin labelling AI-enhanced images developed on rival platforms, such as Google, Open AI, Microsoft and Shutterstock.

Clegg said: “As the difference between human and synthetic content gets blurred, people want to know where the boundary lies.

“People are often coming across AI-generated content for the first time and our users have told us they appreciate transparency around this new technology. So it’s important that we help people know when photorealistic content they’re seeing has been created using AI.”

He added that the feature is already being built, with labels being rolled out in all languages in the coming months.

Clegg continued: “We’re taking this approach through the next year, during which a number of important elections are taking place around the world.

However, he noted the move was limited to images, with AI tools generating audio and videos not currently including these labels.

He said: “We determine that digitally created or altered image, video or audio content creates a particularly high risk of materially deceiving the public on a matter of importance, we may add a more prominent label if appropriate, so people have more information and context.

“This work is especially important as this is likely to become an increasingly adversarial space in the years ahead.”

“People and organisations that actively want to deceive people with AI-generated content will look for ways around safeguards that are put in place to detect it. Across our industry and society more generally, we’ll need to keep looking for ways to stay one step ahead,” Clegg concluded.

The move follows Google’s parent company rolling out AI tools that help advertisers target audiences and help decide marketers’ budget.

Recently, the search engine integrated its AI model, Gemini, into its Google Ads platform in a bid to enhance advertising performance. The tech giant announced its generative AI tools are now available for beta access to advertisers in the UK and USA.

Meanwhile, the parent company of Facebook has tapped AI to create different variations of ad campaigns.

“As search becomes more visual, we’ve heard advertisers tell us that it can be challenging to create compelling images that drive performance,” Google VP and GM in Google Ads Shashi Thakur said in a recent blog post.

“That’s why we’ve designed the conversational experience to suggest images tailored to your campaign using generative AI and images from your landing page. This capability will increase over the coming months.”

As a result, the new restrictions will help prevent unsolicited messages to teenagers via the social media platforms.

On Instagram, adults over the age of 18 were already restricted from messaging teens who don’t follow them, however, now, this has been applied to all users under the age of 16, and in some regions under 18, by default.

Meanwhile, on Facebook Messenger, teenagers will only receive messages from individuals who are already their Facebook friends.

Meta is also updating its parental control features, resulting in guardians having the authority to approve or reject any changes that teens make to their default privacy settings.

Commenting on the change, the tech giant said: “Under this new default setting, teens can only be messaged or added to group chats by people they already follow or are connected to, helping teens and their parents feel even more confident that they won’t hear from people they don’t know in their DMs.”

Existing users will be informed about these changes through notifications.

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has scaled back on its global offices footprint by shutting the doors to its London West End headquarters.

After the closure, Meta’s presence in the UK will exist from its newly expanded Brock Street office and Kings Cross campus.

The parent company of Instagram and Facebook told employees about the change in December.

At the time, a spokesperson said in a statement: “We’re looking forward to consolidating our teams at Rathbone Square into our recently opened King’s Cross campus and our newly expanded Brock Street office.”

However, Meta added that there would not be any reduction in the UK staff figures amid the closure of the Rathbone Square site. According to latest filings, from 2022, showed the technology company had a headcount of 7,000 in the UK, however due to redundancies, it has been reported Meta now employs 5,000 staff members in the UK.

The news comes as Meta opened the doors to its new Dublin office, which employed around 2,000 people.

At the time, Meta Head of Meta Ireland and Vice President of Mid-Market Global Business Group in EMEA, Anne O’Leary said: ”

“Today marks a positive new chapter in the story of Meta in Ireland. We opened our first Irish office in 2009, with a team of 25 people.

“Now, with over 2,000 employees across 80 teams in three Irish locations, our operations continue to play an important role for Meta, both in Ireland and globally, as we build the future through AI and immersive technologies.”
